When modding an original GBA with a 101 screen, the default Brightness will be that of an SP-101 on the lowest Brightness setting. To achieve maximum Brightness using the standard ribbon cable adapter you are required to solder one point from the ribbon adapter to the GBA motherboard. Most people don't bother doing this or can't solder.
If you're fine with the 001 screen, you're probably looking at 70-80$. The 101, probably around $120. An IPS modded GBA SP will usually be more like $180-200, but they vary a lot because when someone does one mod, they might do others as well. Personally I'm a diehard for the 101 screen, but many people prefer the IPS.

The original Game Boy Advance SP has a front-lit screen and is the dimmer model called the AGS-001. This frontlight tends to have a dim blue light that can be turned on or off completely. The later AGS-101 model is the brighter backlit version of the SP. This screen will be very brightly lit and similar to screens of newer models like the DS lite.

Colours are much deeper and viewing angle is way wider. 101 screens also have a slight scan line effect whereas the IPS does not. Aspect ratio is correct on both screens.
